Knowle Village, Fareham
Plincke prepared an urban design feasibility study and masterplan for Knowle Village – utilising the Listed buildings of a former psychiatric hospital. This change of use emphasised a high quality public realm centred around a ‘village centre’ providing a legible layout, appropriate mix of development and uses, co-ordinated use of materials, hierarchy of routes and spaces, and disposition of public open space. A new 1.5 km long road passes through open countryside to access the village.
The village accommodates a population of 2,000 on the 8 hectare site, providing for the County’s acute housing need. In addition Plincke provided detailed landscape design and contract management services for 4 phases of the development’s implementation. This included the preparation of a woodland management plan and securing funding from the Forestry Commission for the establishment of new tree planting areas.
