University of Southampton, Library Square
Plincke were lead consultants for the design and implementation of Library Square, the focal point of the Jubilee Gardens – a sequence of landscaped spaces created to commemorate 50 years of full university status.
The square conceptually responds to the maritime history of Southampton with an undulating series of landforms. A number of artefacts, salvaged from the University’s earlier building were displayed for the first time since the building’s demolition in the 1950s.
The square is a popular meeting and socialising place with full public access. It also functions as an outdoor exhibition space, with a series of plinths for smaller artworks and lawns for large installations.
