Putney Plaza, London

Plincke have been commissioned to design a new public plaza and private rooftop terraces to a prestigious west London mixed use development. The scheme ties into a wider public realm strategy by providing new pedestrian links within the local neighbourhood to East Putney Tube Station.

This mixed-use development offers 197 residential units, office, flexible retail and café space with the intention to regenerate East Putney.  In addition, Putney Plaza will aim to improve links to its tube station by providing a new public pedestrian route linking Woodlands Way to Upper Richmond Road.

An outdoor café, temporary market stalls and integrated planters and seating will all contribute to creating an animated public square to be used by the surrounding community and private residents. A strong identity for the scheme has been developed through the use high quality paving and planter materials, mature planting, and a high attention to aesthetic details.

The site offers a particular set of challenges as 3 railway lines surround it, and the desire for mature planting had to be overcome by the basement podium level below the plaza. There is a set of communal and private roof terraces, which offer opportunities for play, allotments, and relaxation. The aim of public plaza is to create a garden oasis to be viewed from above and enjoyed as a new public space for Putney.
