New Court, Exeter
The New Court area has been identified as a possible sustainable urban extension to the city of Exeter. The site comprises 70 ha of former MoD land adjacent to East Devon’s green belt. Plincke were appointed to coordinate a strategic masterplan and design framework for the development that includes 3,700 new homes and a 20-hectare employment district. The site fulfils a key component in the city’s housing needs and the first two phases of development comprising of 200 homes has received planning permission.
The design framework sought to achieve an integrated environmental response to the open space standards, storm water management, and pedestrian and cycle links. The result is a robust series of linear green parks that additionally form biodiversity corridors.
A high quality public realm was envisaged with a number of threshold spaces that link the different functions of the development. These included a new market square that provides the civic heart to the scheme and focal point of community events and activities.
