Springwell School, Southampton
Working to a tight budget, we set out to deliver a series of challenging, imaginative and secure spaces for the use of the pupils with mixed needs.
Secure external classroom spaces lined two sides of a cloister, which in turn connects the classroom spaces to the communal external play and performance space. On the opposite side of the cloister the external performance space is framed by a circular sensory garden designed to maximise the variety of scent, colour and texture. Brightly covered canopies provide shade and shelter, extending the seasonal uses of the outdoor spaces.
The site was also adjacent to a significant area of woodland that was protected throughout the construction process. The woodland forms part of a green corridor that connected this inner city site through to the Hampshire countryside – it has significant educational value and our plans ensured it can be regularly used for lessons.
