Tanbridge School, Horsham
The secondary school was the first to be constructed in keeping with the new National Curriculum, placing a strong emphasis on creating usable exterior spaces. These not only include gardens for outdoor learning but additionally ones which will assist in developing social skills. A landscape framework of trees and shrubs surrounds the site whilst the focus of the campus is the central piazza. The piazza comprises a series of linked terraces with high quality hard paving materials, a grid of trees and a spacious drama lawn associated with an outside stage. The £1.1 million landscape scheme includes an all-weather pitch and extensive playing fields. An outdoor swimming pool completes the School’s sports facilities.
The RIBA praised the integration of architecture and landscape in presenting the project with the Downland Design Award and RIBA: Regional Award. The project also received an RSA: Art for Architecture Award.
