Park Campus, Lambeth
The 2010 winner of BCSE ‘Best Outdoor Learning Environment’, Park Campus is a pupil referral unit providing short-term education for children who have been excluded or have behavioural problems. Intended for just 110 pupils the design also accommodates the Behaviour and Education Support Teams for the London Borough of Lambeth’s Behaviour Improvement Programme. It is the first unit of its kind to be built for a generation and was devised from first principles in close collaboration with the headteacher.
The central focus of the school is a stepped courtyard space that encourages interaction between pupils in a civilised and civilising environment. A dining terrace breaks out onto a terrace under a canopy structure that provides shaded external space. Beyond the courtyard space, a synthetic all weather pitch provides for both the school’s and extended community’s need for access to sports.
