Minster School, Southwell

Since opening in 2007, the new Minster School has attracted critical acclaim, winning both the RIBA Sorrell Foundation Schools Award and an RIBA Regional Award.

The existing school was split across two sites on the edge of the historic Georgian town. This project involved bringing together the whole 1600-pupil school into a new building on one site. The largest building to be constructed in Southwell since the Minster nearly 900 years earlier, the school creates a threshold between the town and open countryside.

A materials palette was carefully developed that responds to this context, with brick being used when facing the town and timber when facing the countryside. The external spaces between the building blocks have been splayed to increase the views to the wider landscape whilst providing highly functional break-out spaces for learning outside the classroom.
