Phoenix Park, Wolverhampton
Phoenix Park has a varied history dating back over 150 years, having previously been a site for coal mining, clay extraction, brick manufacture and landfill. Prior to development, the park was a barren area of close mown amenity grass with little visual interest.
The proposals followed a competition winning design entry in 2004, which concentrated on the outcomes of a series of publicly held design workshops that targeted traditionally excluded groups, in addition to local residents and businesses.
The park now has improved the entrance areas, and provided a sensory garden, a new multi-use games area and improved sports pitches, circulatory footpaths to be used by the local ‘Walk to Health’ group, a refurbished play area for under 10s and a new adventure play area for teenagers.
