St James’s Institute of Oncology, Leeds

St James’s Institute of Oncology is the largest Cancer Research hospital in Europe with 66,500sqm of research, teaching and patient facilities. It provides all non-surgical oncology services (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, clinical haematology and palliative care) and a small number of specialist surgical services.

The design concept explored the idea of order and disorder as a journey through life, through the context of linked healing-gardens. Our approach focused on the healing and rejuvenation aspects of landscape, and how a strong landscape narrative can support patient health and recovery.

The designs provided a new plaza and drop-off area, external balconies and elevated walkways, two internal relaxation courtyards and various streetscape design proposals.
