The landscape design was a key factor in integrating the contemporary building into the historic suroundings a new Visitor’s Centre at Winchester Cathedral. We worked closely with Architecture plb to design a series of linked courtyards enabling the display of artefacts and historic interpretation of the Cathedral.
The courtyards lead to a paved terrace which reflects the calm of the cathedral cloister and is a popular place to eat. The planting design of the courtyards are attractive throughout the year and additionally contain plants of biblical significance which emphasises the sense of place and provide for educational opportunities.
The Visitor Centre was opened by the Queen in November 1993 in celebration of the Cathedral’s 900th anniversary. The project won Preservation Society Award and the Winchester City Award.
