University of Southampton, Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology Centre is an award-winning project occupying an important gateway site.  The building and landscape design explores the relationship between the urban context of the University but also the adjacent natural landscape of Southampton Common: a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest.  The landscape design responds with the creation of four distinctly different typologies.  A natural green edge to the Common includes a SUDs scheme.  A tree lined frontage to the public road.  A granite paved semi-public plaza with trees, modern lighting columns, and raised cubes – which act both as subtle traffic control and as seating for break-out meetings. Whilst a roof deck provides a secure and private social space with a dramatic viewing platform overlooking the campus.
